Open for business after TC Debbie came to town

9 days since the Whitsunday region was affected by a category 4 tropical cyclone Debbie and the community is working tirelessly to get back into action. Whilst there was damage to houses, parks, boats and business, the spirits in the region remain high and the focus is on getting back to business as soon as possible.

For the team at Lure, this week has not been without its challenges – no power/ water or mobile communications!! As soon as we were able, we contacted all the brides and business events customers who have upcoming bookings to assure them that there is no damage to the venue and we are up and running. We have a wedding for 100 people booked for this weekend, so we arranged delivery of a huge generator to enable the catering team to work their magic and to allow the venue to be air-conditioned and the DJ to be able to spin those tunes! The good news is last night the power to the marina was restored and so everything can proceed as scheduled.

The beautiful stories to come out of a weather event like this, are the human ones. The young couple Bhrett and Jamie getting married this weekend are Whitsunday locals and were determined not to let TC Debbie ruin their plans for the big day. A ring around accommodation houses saw them relocate their wedding guest to the The Heart Hotel & Gallery in Airlie Beach. The wedding suppliers they have booked have worked without water and power in most cases to ensure their day goes without a hitch. We can’t wait to see the smile on the couples faces as they enter their reception surrounded by all their family and friends, then watch everyone kick up their heels on the dancefloor and release some tension!

Following the posts on social media these last few days, it is apparent that local businesses and the community have very much banded together to help their friends, neighbours, colleagues get back to a sense of normality. The important message for us all to now communicate is that the Whitsundays is very much open for business. The charter boats are running, the helicopters are flying, the restaurants are serving, the hotels are accommodating and the sun is shining! Ok, so there may be one or two less leaves on the trees that there were before, but they will grow back and everywhere in town now has a stunning sea view.

Show your support for the region and book a wedding, schedule a business event or just lock in a holiday for 2017 – we guarantee the Whitsundays will not disappointed!
